Sap is a recurring spell in the Dragon Quest series. Introduced in Dragon Quest III, it has a chance to lower an enemy's defence if the target has no resistance.

Appearances

Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake

Only appearing in the game's HD-2D Remake, it is learned by Peronel at level 13, and can also be learned by Matilda after obtaining a scroll in Rimuldar. It costs 3 MP to cast once again, and is also used by Boat-borers and Hypermalediction.

Dragon Quest III

Making its debut, it is learned by Mages and Sages at level 8 and costs 3 MP to cast. The Orochi's sword can emulates the effect when used as an item in battle. It is also used by the Madvlad and Grand Dragon in the HD-2D Remake.

Dragon Quest IV

Borya and Maya both learn this spell at level 5 and costs 3 MP to cast once again. It is also used by Splatypunks, Buffalo wings, and Strangler fish in battle, marking the first time monsters can use this spell.

Acting the same as in its last 2 appearances, it is learned by recruited Rotten Apples at level 3, Beastmasters at level 5, Pocus Poppets at level 7, recruited Wiz Pips at level 10, and recruited Hoodlums at level 20. It costs 3 MP to cast once again, and is also used by Will-o'-the-whipses, Bludgerigars, Pocus poppets, Quadraheads, Mermen, and the Haunted housekeeper, as well as Wiz Pips in the remakes.

Dragon Quest VI

Acting the same as in previous appearances, it is learned by the Hero at level 7 and already known by Ashlynn upon joining the party. It costs 3 MP to cast once again, and is also used by Stumpkins, Malevolanterns, Marine spirits, and the Bloodcreeper in battle.

Dragon Quest VII

Acting the same as in previous appearances once again, it is learned by Maribel at level 4, advancing to Rank 4 of the Mage vocation, and Rank 2 of the Mandrake Major. It costs 3 MP to cast once again, and is also used by Crested vipers, Whopper hoppers, Wiz pips, Barracudas, the Tinpot Dictator, and Setesh the Punisher in battle. In the game's Reimagined remake, it is learned by advancing to Proficiency Rank 3 of the Mage vocation. It costs 2 MP to cast for the first time since XI, and is also used by Florin, as well as Mermen once again.

Dragon Quest VIII

Acting the same as in previous appearances once again, it is already learned by Jessica Albert when she joins the party. It costs 3 MP cast once again, and is also used by Capsichums, as well as Mermen once again. It is also learned by Morrie in the 3DS remake when one invests 8 skill points in his Passion skill tree.

Dragon Quest IX

Sap is learned by Mages at level 7 and Armamentalists at level 5. It costs 2 MP to cast, and will improve in accuracy once the caster's magical might reaches 50. Once the stat value surpasses 999, the spell will become 100% accurate barring monster resistance, though it can only be cast twice.

Dragon Quest X

Learned by Minstrels at level 10 and already learned by Pirates, it acts the same as in IX and costs 2 MP to cast once again. It is also used by Grudgerigars, Super Darkisms, and Golden Zeplings, as well as Stumpkins once again. In the Offline version, it is already learned by Distan and Anlucia when they join the party, as well as the Hero in the Minstrel vocation at level 10 once again.

Dragon Quest XI

Already learned by Veronica and Rab when they join the party, it acts the same as in its last two appearances and costs 2 MP to cast once again. It is also used by , as well as Splatypunks (For the first time since IV) and Mermen once again.

Dragon Warrior Monsters

This ability can be learned by a variety of monsters. It requires the monster to reach at least level 4 with at least 18 MP, and 15 Intelligence. It is naturally learned by the madpecker, madplant, medusaeye, orc, picky, putrepup, skeletor, treeslime and voodoll.

Dragon Warrior Monsters 2

Sap now requires 27 Intelligence to learn. It is learned by the axeshark, drygon, lizardfly, merman and multieyes.

Sap can no longer be learned from Diabolist. It can now be learned from Flute Warrior for 5 points or from Morrie's Melange for 8 points.

Dragon Quest Walk

Sap is learned by Mages and Sages at level 15. It reduces the Defence of one enemy by two levels for three turns.

Dragon Quest Tact

Acting the same as in previous appearances once again, it is learned by Drackmages and Fandangows at level 16, and already learned by Treevils, Hargonauts, Mermen, Skeleton Swordsmen, Orc Queens, Pink bonbons, and Dread Drackies when they are recruited, costing 9 MP to cast. A scroll of this spell can be obtained by defeating Spooky Valencia 100 times during the Halloween Event.

Dragon Quest Treasures

Acting the same as in previous appearances once again, it is learned by Shadows and Dread drackies at level 15 and costs 5 MP to cast.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince

Sap reduces one monster's defence by 80%. Sap has a base success chance of 60% and a maximum success chance of 80% at 3,999 wisdom. The spell is learned through the Dark Artist, Enfeebler, Hexcommunicator, Irritant, Magic Maven, Thrill-Seeker, and Zam Afficionado talents.
