Lightning Slash (Aka Thunder Slash) is a recurring skill in the Dragon Quest series. Contrary to its name, it powers up an attack with the might of a colossal explosion rather than a bolt of electricity, though the latter is more also definite.
Appearances
Dragon Quest I HD-2D Remake
Only appearing in the game's HD-2D Remake, it is learned by the Hero at level 24 and costs 8 MP to use. If used alongside the Soul Sigil, it becomes the Souped-Up Skill Lightning Thrust.
Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake
Only appearing in the game's HD-2D Remake, it is learned by the Prince of Cannock at level 19, and costs 8 MP to use once again. Just like in I HD-2D, if it is used alongside the Soul Sigil, it becomes the Souped-Up Skill Lightning Thrust.
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake
Only appearing in the game's HD-2D Remake, it is learned by Erdrick at level 17 and recruited Restless armours, costing 7 MP to use.
Dragon Quest VI
Making its debut, it is learned by advancing to rank 3 of the Armamentalist vocation and deals variable melee damage, with the power being dependent on the target's resistance to the Bang element, with the possible modifiers being 130%, 115%, 75%, and 30%. It costs 0 MP to use and is also used by Bad karmours and Zombie gladiators in battle against their enemies.
The reason for this deceitful discrepancy is likely balance concerns, as only a handful of monsters can resist lighting and thus the skill would be too easy to abuse.
Dragon Quest VII
Acting the same as in VI, it is learned by advancing to rank 3 of the Armamentalist once again, as well as advancing to rank 2 as a Hero in the 3DS version of the game. It costs 0 MP to use once again, and is also used by Ceramic sergeants in battle, as well as Maeve when she temporarily joins the party. It can also be learned by Kiefer in the Reimagined remake after reaching Proficiency Level 5 of Heir Apparent and costs 2 MP to use once again.
Dragon Quest VIII
Thunder Slash is an enemy-only skill used by Phantom fencers and Riptides, as well as Zombie Gladiators once again.
Dragon Quest IX
Thunder Slash is used once again by the aquatic Riptides, as well as the newly introduced Prime slimes to attack enemies. Players may duplicate the technique by way of the Armamentalist's Gale Fource. The skill itself has been balanced so that the double attribute nature of this technique will not negate the effectiveness of one element over the other.
Dragon Quest X
Despite still being an enemy-only skill used by Mandrake majors, Prickly pranksters, Ashe, and Terudmir, as well as Zombie Gladiators once again, players who recruit Mandrake majors to their side can have them learn it by investing 18 skill points into their Gekkou Sword Style Technique, costing 2 MP to use and can potentially paralyze those it hits. Its power is also buffed by 1.6 times +10 from the latter half of 2.3 onwards, and can also be enhanced by the Lightning feat special power +20%, learned by investing 25 skill points into the Gekkou Swordsman Style skill tree.
Dragon Quest XI
Appearing in only the 3DS and Definitive versions, it is used by Maeve in her boss battle.
Dragon Quest Monsters
BoltSlash is a normal attack that deals increased damage based on the target's lightning resistance. It can be learned naturally by ArcDemon, BoneSlave, Coatol, EvilArmor, HornBeet, LandOwl, RotRaven, and ZapBird as long as it is a level 11 and has 77 max HP, 34 max MP, 66 Attack, and 42 Intelligence. BoltSlash can also be learned by any monster that knows both the ChargeUP and Lightning skills.
Dragon Warrior Monsters 2
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker
Lightning Slash can be learned by various monsters, costing 2 MP to use, and can be learned from the Dragon Lore, Thunderwind Slashes, and Wulfspade skillsets.
Dragon Quest: Monster Battle Road Series
Reappearing from Battle Road onwards, it is the Phantom Fencer's red button skill that damages one enemy and can potentially land a critical hit. When paired up with the player in the Hero vocation, it becomes Killer Sword.
Dragon Quest: Scan Battlers
Acting the same as in previous appearances once again, it is one of the Okeanos sword's skills.
Dragon Quest Tact
Acting the same as in previous appearances once again, it is learned by Bewarewolves and Leery Louts at level 16, and already learned by Hawk Men, Mad Moles, Foo Dogs, Mandrake Majors, Firebirds, Gold Lions, and Thunderbirds when they are recruited, costing 3 MP to use. A scroll of this ability can be obtained for 750 DQIII Medals at the Swap Shop and by clearing Stage 2 of Krystalinda and Lawson overkilling machine's Battle Roads and Stage 4 of Baran, Mjoll, and Mindini Hunter's Battle Roads.
Dragon Quest Treasures
Acting the same as in previous appearances once again, it is learned by Amber drackys and costs 4 MP to use.
Dragon Quest Champions
Acting the same as in X, it is already learned when wielding the Sword of Kings and costs 15 MP to use.
Dragon Quest Smash/Grow
Acting the same as in previous appearances once again, it is the Coup de Grâce for the Platinum sword and Tantegel sword, costing 5 Gauge to use.
