Dave (pronunced as Dah-veh) is a major character in Dragon Quest XI.

Biography

Originally hailing from Zwaardsrust, he was the top of the kingdom's Royal Navy. When its king was killed by monsters, however, he became a pink-masked pirate, striking fear into the hearts of the most vile people of the seas until he met Sylvando and became his most loyal companion, traveling Erdrea. He and Sylvando became renowned for an incident on the Inland Sea once upon a time, turning many ships' masts pink in a single night.

He first appears in Gondolia, riding in with Sylvando to save the Luminary and his allies from Jasper and the Knights of Heliodor. Before they could celebrate, a tentacular attacks the Stallion on Jasper's orders, with Dave cowering in fear of the monster. However, Gondolian merchant ships scare it off with their cannon fire, allowing them to continue with their adventure. From then on, Dave can be talked to if the Luminary wants to go back onto his ship.

His role in the Definitive Edition is the same, but he's the one who inspires Sylvando to bring sunshine and happiness back to the people of Erdrea. He can also aid Sylv in battle with his abilities like Drop Kick and Sobering Slap, as well as healing Sylv with Special medicines.

Personality

While Dave may look intimidating, he is kind on the inside, and is willing to help anyone. His loyalty to Sylvando is second to none, even snapping him out of his depression after Jasper and Mordegon brought down the World Tree. He also admires the mermaids, as seen when Michelle makes her presence known.

Trivia

• Dave is similar to Yangus from Dragon Quest VIII. Both once led a life of thievery, but become a loyal companion of someone who set them straight (the Dragovian retainer and Sylvando). Both are voiced by Fumihiko Tachiki in the Japanese versions of their respective games.
• Dave nicknamed all of his attacks after himself, with examples like his punch, the "Dave Chop", and his Drop Kick, the "Dave Kick".
• Dave can be summoned in battle with the use of the Pep Power Hit Parade. Similarly to Yangus's Golden Oldies, this Pep Power summons various side characters, in this case the Soldiers of Smile and Dave to create a stampede of people to crush the enemy.
