Heliodor is a city in Dragon Quest XI. One of the five crown cities of Erdrea, it is the seat of its namesake kingdom. Located at the centre of the known world, it is one of the most prosperous and mightiest of states.
Overview
As the capital of the Heliodor region, the city is well-populated. The player is introduced to several basic functions including using an inn and readable books here. Heliodor is divided into several districts, including the upper-class district nearer to the castle, and downtown.
Downtown Heliodor is noted as a hangout for thieves and other shady characters. The solitary street is lined with ramshackle buildings and pavilions. A single gate prevents downtown residents from crossing into the main city, but the guard is seen to be easily bribed and distracted.
The city boasts a network of sewers that can be used to enter and exit without being noticed. The sewer network leads into the castle dungeons.
The residents of Heliodor speak with various English accents as an indicator of class. The Royal Family and the nobility speak with Received Pronunciation (RP) accents, whilst the impoverished and seedier residents of Downtown Heliodor speak with Cockney accents.
Connecting Areas
- Heliodor Castle, crowning the landscape for miles around, sits due north of the city.
- Downtown Heliodor, a de-facto sister city, sits at the foot of the city walls, and is accessed via a passage at the city's east end.
- The Heliodor Region is due southeast of the city gates.
- The secluded Heliodorian Foothills sit below cliffs due southwest of the city.
Story

A Hero Comes of Age
The Luminary first enters Heliodor to speak to its ruler, King Carnelian. However, he is arrested under suspicion of being the Darkspawn and tossed into the castle dungeons. The Luminary escapes with the help of Erik. Later, the pair return under the cover of darkness to search downtown for Erik's partner Derk. After the two leave, Erik notes the amount of Heliodoran guards searching for the Luminary, and the city becomes inaccessible until before the Fall of Yggdrasil.
Rise of the Lord of Shadows
Following the Fall of Yggdrasil, Heliodor was overtaken by the demonic forces of Mordegon and left in complete ruin. Hendrik and the Luminary inflitrate the sewers under the ruined city to enter the castle once more. There, the pair find Jasper having taken the throne. Hendrik proceeds to arrest Jasper, but he escapes and leaves the Spectral Sentinel Tyriant in his stead to battle the heroes. Tyriant is swiftly dispatched, releasing the Orb that gave him control over illusions and restoring the natural flow of time.
In Search of Lost Time
With the Luminary having travelled back in time to prevent Yggdrasil's Fall, Heliodor's destruction was averted. It is here that Mordegon meets his end at the hands of the Luminary, and the restless spirit of Sir Jasper is later put to rest by his brother-in-arms, Hendrik.
