Cetacea is a fabled flying whale that ferries chosen heroes and their allies across the expanse of Erdrea. Despite her incredible size, Cetacea is an elegant being who sails through the blue sky with the gracefulness of a spring breeze.
Appearance
Cetacea is an egg-white Baleen Whale approximately one hundred feet long, a pale white jaw and ventral pleats, and red markings under her golden eyes. Being adapted to life in the skies, Cetacea is carried by two massive wings that extend from her sides from the rise of her back. These wings have a golden under-coloration, and are the only part of her underbelly that is not a shade of white. Her pectoral fins possess two overlapping rows of feathers, with a second smaller set extending from behind her wings at the beginning of her tail. Cetacea's fluke is more V-shaped than a normal whale's, and resembles a pair of flower petals. Cetacea is adorned with golden markings across her back, with a blue gem set in a headdress behind her blowhole. Once she is granted the power needed to puncture Calasmos' barrier, Cetacea wears gold armor adorned with solar markings and the light from her gemstone condenses into a beam of energy resembling a narwhal's horn.
Personality
Cetacea is a dedicated companion to the Luminary, as she was to Erdwin in the distant past. She does not hesitate to breach dens of evil, and she participates in the final battle with Calasmos by carrying the party within the void of space and projecting a wide magical sigil for the heroes to stand upon and fight without restriction.
Biography
Dragon Quest XI
Cetacea can be summoned once the party has been given the Calamus flute by Father Benedictus in Arboria in the second act of the game. When the Luminary tries to play it, the flute transforms into a fishing rod with a line made of glowing light. Casting the line into the air, Cetacea responds to the signal and rises to meet the party.
Riding on Cetacea's back opens a secondary world map in the 3D mode of the game and, in the 3DS and Switch versions, a raised perspective of the normal world map in the 2D mode. Due to her size, Cetacea can only drop the heroes off at specific points known as Whale Way Stations; these points are marked by tall shafts of rotating light that cannot be missed. Cetacea can be summoned from any location in Erdrea, but unless she is called from one of these stations, she will begin her flight from the Luminary's Landing station.
