Biography
Days as an Adventurer
At some point in his youth, Chalky set out in search of an artifact known as the Rainbough after learning that the Chief Minister of Zwaardsrust was offering a reward of one million gold coins to whoever found it. At some point after setting off on his journey, he ended up in Lonalulu after hearing rumors that a schooner carrying the Rainbough was wrecked somewhere in Erdrea's southern seas. After enlisting the aid the village's finest fisherman in exchange for a couple of his maps and charts, he searched the southern seas, only to return with a bunch of scallops. Despite having not found the Rainbough, he enjoyed his time in the village. Afterwards, he travelled to L'Académie de Notre Maitre des Médailles after hearing a rumor that Rainbough was being offered as a prize in exchange for 99 mini medals. Unfortunately, the prize turned out to be a Drasilian soldier's uniform. After learning from the students about the Kingdom of Sniflheim, where some of the most knowledgeable minds in Erdrea gather, he decided to head there. However, while on the way there, he came across young man collapsed by the roadside and nearly buried in snow. Refusing to let the young man die, Chalky decided to help him. Unfortunately, the young man was suffering from a fever and kept stating that he had to get home. Wishing to help him, Chalky decided to put his search for the Rainbough on hold and take him back to his village. At the first inn they stayed at, the two met a doctor from Gallopolis who was also going the same way they were, so Chalky allowed him to come along with them. They eventually made it the young man's village, Arboria, where he learned that young man was the son of Arboria's High Priest. As a reward for bringing his son back, the High Priest offered Chalky and the doctor a choice between two great treasures: the Rainbough and a small blue stone that, according to the High Priest, was needed to open the Door of Departure. While initially wanting the Rainbough, he changed his mind, realizing that what he wanted was not the Rainbough, but the joy of the journey. He instead took the blue stone while the doctor took the Rainbough.
Adopting the Luminary
After many adventures, he returned to his hometown of Cobblestone, where he got married and had a daughter name Amber. Many years later, while Chalky is out fishing at a stream when he hears the cries of a baby. He is shocked to find a baby boy in a basket safe after a recent storm. Chalky picks up the baby boy and reassures him that there's no reason to be frightened anymore. He takes the child back to the village of Cobblestone, where he is raised as the son of Amber. In the basket, Chalky finds a letter from the boy's mother and a mysterious pendant.
Dragon Quest XI
By the time of the Hero's 16th birthday, Chalky has already passed away. When it is time for the young man to start his journey after completing his coming-of-age ceremony at the top of Cobblestone Tor, Amber gives Chalky's former traveling clothes to the Hero and tells him that Chalky wanted him to go Heliodor and speak with King Carnelian, with Chalky believing that the king would aid him on his quest.
After returning to Cobblestone after escaping from Heliodor, the Hero briefly ends up in past when Chalky is still alive. While wandering around the village, he encounters Chalky, who immediately realizes that he is his grandson from the future. Sensing that something had happened, he asks the Hero what had happened. He is saddened to learn that King Carnelian had labeled the Hero the Darkspawn and had him thrown into the dungeon, saying that if he had known what would have happened, he would have told his grandson everything. He then tells the Hero to go to Cobblestone Falls and dig near a three sided rock. Before the Hero returns to his time, Chalky tells him to not live his life bearing grudges and to instead live life with love. After returning to the present, the Hero and Erik head to Cobblestone Falls and dig at the spot that Chalky mentioned. There, they discover a chest containing the Keystone, a letter from the Hero's mother, and a letter from Chalky, telling the Hero to use the Keystone to go through the Door of Departure and head out into the world in order to seek the truth.
