A scale shield is a shield that appears in the Dragon Quest series. It is usually a lower-grade, but lighter shield composed of hardened dragon scales; and as such it can be carried by most humanoids of any age, gender, and species. Except for plates repurposed as shields, the scale shield is often the best shield for those not in an attack-focused Vocation.

Dragon Quest III Remakes
The scale shield has a defence bonus of +12, and can be equipped by the Hero, Warriors, Priests, Merchants, Gadabouts, Thieves & Sages. It can be purchased for 600 G coins, and sold for 450.
Dragon Quest IV
Making its debut, the scale shield has a defence bonus of +7 and can be equipped by Solo, Ragnar McRyan, Kiryl, Borya, Torneko Taloon, and Meena, but cannot be equipped by Alena and Maya.
Dragon Quest V
The scale shield has a defence bonus of +7. They can be bought for 180 G in Roundbeck, Fortuna, Lodestar Harbour, Zoomingale, and Gotha. The Hero, Bianca, Nera, Son, Daughter, Harry, Sancho, and Tuppence can equip it.
Dragon Quest VI
Scale shields have a defense bonus of +7 and a style bonus of +4. The Hero, Carver, Amos, Terry, Nevan, and Goowain can equip them. Gum shields and Wayward armours have a 1/64 chance of dropping a scale shield. They can be sold for 135 G and bought for 180 G in Haggleton, Somnia, and Port Haven.
Dragon Quest VII
The scale shield has a defence bonus of +7 and a style bonus of +4. It can be equipped by the Hero, Kiefer, Sir Mervyn, and Aishe and is sold in both versions of Emberdale for 180 G.
Dragon Quest VIII
The scale shield has a defence bonus of +7. All characters can equip this shield. They can be bought in Alexandria, Port Prospect, and Peregrin Quay for 180 G as well as sold for 90 G. Headhunters, Wild boarfish, and Yabbies drop them rarely. Its alchemy recipe is Leather shield + Dragon scale.
