Sandstorm (AKA Sand Screen in DQotS) is a recurring skill in the Dragon Quest series.
Description
Blinds all enemies with sand in their eyes.
Appearances
Dragon Quest I HD-2D Remake
Only appearing in the game's HD-2D Remake, it is learned by the Hero after obtaining a scroll in Erdrick's Hollow. It costs 3 MP to use once again, and is used by Rampages and Blue Dragons once again.
Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake
Only appearing in the game's HD-2D Remake, it is used by Rampages, Elysium Birds, Blue Dragons, and Xenlon once again.
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake
Only appearing in the game's HD-2D Remake, it is already learned by Thieves when they are recruited. It costs 3 MP to use, and is used by Rampages, Elysium birds, Blue dragons, and Xenlon in battle.
Dragon Quest IV NES and PS1
Making its debut, it is a random action of Torneko Taloon that can potentially blind enemies in battle. However, it does not appear in the DS remake onwards, having been deleted.
Dragon Quest V
Now a skill for enemies, it is used by Flatulent ferrets, Foetid ferrets, Drag-goons, and Mother ockers to blind enemies in battle.
Dragon Quest VI
Now a fully usable skill by players, it is learned by advancing to Rank 1 of the Thief vocation. It costs 0 MP to use, with Chompoceroses and Prison guards using it in battle. Its range is reduced to 1 enemy group in the remakes, though.
Dragon Quest VII
Acting the same as in VI, it is again learned at the Thief vocation through Rank 2 this time, but can also be acquired at Rank 4 of the Mimic vocation. It costs 0 MP to use once again and is also used by Shabby cats, Vile vials, Half hogs, Whole hogs, Blighted bloaters, Hell hogs, Rashers, and Bagley in battle. The range is reduced to 1 enemy group in the 3DS remake, similar to VI's remake, as well as learning it at Rank 1 of the Thief vocation again. In the Reimagined remake, it is also used by Blightcrawlers in battle.
Dragon Quest VIII
While an enemy only skill that is used by Jargons in battle against their enemies, it can also be used by players via the infamous Jargon and/or using the Sandstorm spear as an item in battle.
Dragon Quest IX
An enemy only skill for the first time since V, it is used by Sacksquatchs and Power hammers in battle against their enemies. The effect can be replicated by using the Sandstorm spear as an item in battle once again.
Dragon Quest XI
Reappearing after taking a backseat from the previous game, it is used by Cheater cheetahs, as well as Jargons once again in battle.
Dragon Warrior Monsters
This ability requires the monster to reach Level 10 with 47 MP and 41 Intelligence. It is naturally learned by the BigRoost, MetalDrak, MiniDrak and Trumpeter.
Dragon Warrior Monsters 2
SandStorm now requires 70 Intelligence to learn. It is naturally learned by the Brushead, Grakos and RushFish.
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker
Sandstorm can be learned from:
- Bird Brain (48 points)
- Bolsterer (8 points)
- Dragon Lore (18 points)
- Naturalist (7 points)
- Speedster (25 points)
- Toughie (10 points)
Dragon Quest: Monster Battle Road Series
Reappearing from Battle Road onwards, it is the Jargon's blue button skill that damages one enemy with sand while potentially blinding it. If used alongside the player in the Warrior vocation, it becomes the Hip Drop skill.
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2/Joker 2 Professional
Sandstorm can be learned from all the skills it could be previously, though the point requirements for Bird Brain, Dragon Lore, and Speedster have changed. It can now be learned from:
- Bird Brain (38 points)
- Dragon Lore (17 points)
- Missing lynx (20 points)
- Orochi (27 points)
- Speedster (35 points)

Acting the same as in previous appearances, it is learned by Candy cats at level 3, and Jargons at level 9, costing 12 MP to use.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince
Sandstorm costs 2 MP and attempts to blind all enemies for 2~5 turns. It is learned through the Assassin, Blazer, Blusterer, Cutpurse, Dark Horse, Devil's Advocate, Doomsayer, Dragonheart, Enigma, Musclehead, Naturalist, Shallow Breather, Speedster, Vexologist, and Wild Child talents.
