Double Up is a recurring ability in the Dragon Quest series.
Description
Affects the potency of the user's attack while lowering their defence, despite changing significantly throughout its appearances.
Appearances
Dragon Quest I HD-2D Remake
Only appearing in the game's HD-2D Remake, it is used by the Golem protecting Cantlin, as well as Rampages once again.
Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake
Only appearing in the game's HD-2D Remake, it is learned by Gawain at level 30. It costs 9 MP to use once again, and is also used by War-ruses, the Striking sabrecat in Dirkandor, and Yellowfinks, as well as Rampages, Battering Rams, Stone Guardians, and Great Keepers once again. If used alongside the Soul Sigil, it becomes the Souped-Up Skill Martyr's Barter.
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake
Only appearing in the game's HD-2D Remake, it is learned by Martial Artists at level 28. It costs 9 MP to use, and is used by Battering rams, Rampages, Stone guardians, Great keepers, Chiromancer, the Bones of Baramos, and Grand Dragon in battle.
Dragon Quest VI
Making its debut, it is learned by Carver at level 14 and by Spot at level 16, while other characters can learn it by advancing to rank 3 of the Paladin vocation. It strikes first at 200% power, but the user suffers increased damage during the turn. It costs 0 MP to use and is also used by Berzorkers, Brick, and Averill in battle.
Dragon Quest VII
Acting the same as in VI, it is once again learned by advancing to Rank 3 of the Paladin, but can also be learned by advancing to Rank 1 of the Champion vocation in the 3DS remake. It costs 0 MP to use once again and is also used by Fandangows,
Dragon Quest IX
Learned with 22 skill points allocated into the Gladiator's Guts skill tree, it acts differently from its last 2 appearances in the main series, increasing the user's attack by two stages, while lowering defence by one stage. The bolstered attack state lasts 6~9 turns, and the crippled defence lasts for 7~10 turns. It costs 0 MP to use once again, and is also used by Harmours and Dreadful drackals in battle against their enemies.
Dragon Quest X
Learned and used the same way as in IX. It costs 4 MP to use, and is also used by Rottontails, Ripped rabbits, Bad hares, Killer fangs, Blondies, and Brigitte in battle against their enemies. From 6.1 onwards, it is replaced with the new Quick Arts skill, but can still be used in Asfeld Academy. In the Offline version of the game, it is learned by the Hero in the Gladiator vocation at level 11 and by investing 5 skill points into Hussar's Cool skill tree.
Dragon Quest XI
Operating as it did in its last two appearances, it is learned by Hendrik after investing 16 skill point into his Heroism skill tree. It costs 4 MP to use once again and is also used by Rottontails and Bad Hares once again.
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker
Double Up can be learned from:

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2/Joker 2 Professional

Acting the same as in previous appearances once again, it is learned at level 10 when equipping the Steel claws and costs 6 MP to use.
