Avan Strash is a recurring sword skill introduced in the Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai. It is created and name after by the legendary hero Avan who use it to defeat the Dark Lord Hadlar 15 years ago.
Description
The Avan Strash is a powerful sword technique created by Avan the legendary hero who use it to defeat the Dark Lord Hadlar long ago. This ultimate technique of the Avan-Style that looks like a shining attack has the ability to slice through anything by performing in a unique stance where the wielder's sword is in a reverse grip to channel the aura into the blade and then swung in a wide sweeping motion that can destroy in a single striking slash, which can kill anyone in a finishing blow.
To use it properly, the user needed to learn and master the Avan Style Sword Techniques, three sword skills namely the Earth Slash, Wave Slash, and Air Slash, which focuses on the training of power, speed, and aura control that embodies one aspect each respectively. If not, then the Avan Strash will be just an incomplete weak imitation.
According to Nova who reads the Book of Avan, the Avan Strash comes in two type of variants that has its advantages and disadvantages: the Arrow type can create a long-range projectile attack that can be used quickly but has a weaker impact and the Break type can do a powerful charge attack with the direct hit of the sword but it takes time to unleash each shot, the uses two variants of the Avan Strash depends on the situation in battle, requires skill and quick judgment.
Appearances
Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai
This the ultimate technique of the Avan-style with which he created to defeat Hadlar 15 years ago, looking like a shining attack. To use it properly, it is needed to learn Earth, Sea and Sky techniques with a weapon, combining Power, Speed and Aura control. With the sword it would be the Earth Slash, Wave Slash and Air Slash.
It exists in two variants: the Avan Strash Arrow, which creates a long-range air projectile attack and the Avan Strash Break, which is a direct hit of the sword.
Dai and Hyunckel learned only the Earth Slash and Wave Slash, and thus their Avan Strash was incomplete.
After Dai managed to learn the Air Slash and thus the complete version, he learned the Arrow version through the Book of Avan with the help of Nova. Dai created the Avan Strash Cross which combines the Arrow and Break type so that the opponent receives both at exactly the same time and creating an attack about five times as strong as the usual Avan Strash. It requires inhuman reflexes from a Dragon Knight to be performed.
It can be combined with a spell by Dragon Knights by using their Magic Sword Coup de Grâce. Dai used the Zap Strash by combining it with Zapple and the Giga Strash by combining the Avan Strash with Gigabreak which itself is a Magic Sword coup de grâce combining a sword attack with Kazap.
During the final battle against Vearn, Dai uses his completed Dragon Crest to its fullest power and potential by transmitting all of his magical power into his own sword, creating the Final Strash, a stronger version of the Giga Strash (however, it was never named).
Jump Force
All three versions are used by Dai in the game.
Dragon Quest Tact
Learned by Dai at level 80, it costs 72 MP to use and deals 400% physical Zap damage to all enemies in range. It requires 2 turns to use and can be used 3 times.
Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai - A Hero's Bonds
Avan Strash can be obtained if one gets the Avan's sword and Knife of Papnica (Sun) weapons.
Trivia
- "Strash" is a coined word from both Strike + Slash or Strike + Crash.[1]
- Dai's move was localised as "Cross" and used "C" as its initial instead of the original "X", but the upcoming tie-in "Xross Battle" scan battler game seem to indicate a new preferred way of localising this move.
- The striking pose was so famous and popular that many boys in Japan held an umbrella in reverse and followed the Avan Strash imitatively.
- In Dragon Quest XI although the skill itself does not appear in the game, the Luminary will perform the various elemental splitter skills using the same motion as the Avan Strash.
