The Nintendo Switch 2, known in development as Ounce and Muji, or Switch 2 for short, is the highly anticipated follow-up to Nintendo's incredibly successful Switch console, and was officially announced on January 16, 2025. The console launched on June 5, 2025, shortly after its announcement.
On July 2, 2025, it was announced that the Switch 2 has now sold over 5M Switch 2 consoles in under a month[1]
Overview
Following the global success of the Nintendo Switch since its release in 2017, Nintendo has reportedly been working on its next-generation console. Referred to by fans and media as the "Switch 2", the system is expected to retain the hybrid design while offering improved hardware and backwards compatibility.
Dragon Quest XII might be playable on Switch 2?
On May 14th, 2025, in an interview published by Noisy Pixel, Dragon Quest series creator Yuji Horii confirmed that Dragon Quest XII is still in active development, and that new information would be coming "soon". Notably, the interview included a remark that the game will likely be released on “next-generation hardware.” According to sources cited in the article, this strongly implies that Dragon Quest XII is being developed with the Nintendo Switch 2 in mind as a key platform.[2]
If true, this would position Dragon Quest XII as one of the first major RPGs to launch on the Switch 2, continuing the series’ tradition of releasing on Nintendo systems.
