NES (top), Famicom (bottom)
The Nintendo Entertainment System (often shortened to NES or just Nintendo) is an 8-bit console released by Nintendo in 1985. In Japan, it was originally sold as the Family Computer, or simply the Famicom.
The NES became the best-selling system of its era in Asia and North America, with Nintendo reporting sales of over 60 million units worldwide. It helped revive the gaming industry after the 1983 crash and heavily shaped the future of gaming, especially with landmark titles like Super Mario Bros., the console’s first major hit. It was also the first console where the company actively encouraged third-party developers to create games.
