Killvearn is an antagonist in the Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai and its animated adaptations. He is known as the Reaper, equipped with the Reaper Flute shaped like a giant scythe, and is always with the Jinkster Piroro. He is also a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series.
Appearance
Killvearn is a mix between a demonic reaper and a court jester, sporting a cowl-like headgear with a large fan-shaped crest, sporting a moon and a star-shaped pendants at the tips, as well as a mixture of elegant purple clothing paired with silver armor, boots and gauntlets. Normally he sports a smiling mask, though he actually has an entire collection of them in his headquarters and, after being challenged by Avan, proceed to wear an angry mask to show his seriousness.
Personality
Killvearn appears to be as playful and carefree, to both his colleagues (even to his superior Vearn) and his enemies alike. In truth, he's a cruel and sadistic person, quick to viciously mock enemy and ally alike, as well as ruthlessly performing his duties in combat.
Surprisingly, Killvearn also has a prideful side, talking at length to Vearn about the deadly effectiveness of his Kill Traps, only to stop in stunned silence when it's neutralized by Avan. Once his pride is hurt, Killvearn's playful attitude will leave place for a ruthless hatred.
Biography
Background
Killvearn is originally a subordinate of the Dragon Velzar that was sent to Vearn to work under him and kill him if he would fail on his attempts, this being the reason for the name "Killvearn". An amused Vearn saw right through this but nonetheless accepted him.
Killvearn works as an assassin, directly under Vearn, and one of his right arms.
Clash Arc
Killvearn came and taunts the Dark Army because they keep failing to kill their sworn enemies, the disciples of Avan, in spite of a full-scale ambush on Valge Island. He taunts Hadlar, the second-in-command of the Dark Army, for his lack of result. He uses the Key of Vearn to move the Sovereign Rock Castle following Crocodine and Hyunckel's defections. Killvearn notices Hadlar's suspicious insistence to keep Baran, the Captain of the Dragon Division, away from Dai, the hero and his own son.
Destiny Arc
He takes troops from the Dragon Legion to assault Bengarna in order to test Dai's strength. After Dai the hero defeats the dragons, causing the citizens to fear him for his superhuman powers, the God of Death reveals himself and taunts him; stating that even though he is risking his life for their sake, humanity is more likely to shun Dai for his difference than to be grateful.
Holy Sword Arc
Killvearn stops Mystvearn from revealing his face, saying that Vearn was not allowed, and then takes his comrade to the Island of Death.
Epic Challenge Arc
Popp foolishly tries to pursue Myst and Kill back to the Field of Death, just for the Reaper to make a plan to almost kill him if it wasn't for Dai's coming and saving his friend. Killvearn and Mystvearn stop fighting Dai when Hadlar appears in his new Hyper-Demon form, and they just watch the battle between the Dark Commander and Dai.
Killvearn tries to assassinate Baran and reveals Vearn's true plans to him, saying that Baran should be finished before his betrayal. However, Killvearn is slashed in half, but is reformed after Baran leaves implying that he is immortal.
Halo Arc
Killvearn sets numerous traps inside the Vearn Palace, one of them being activated when Hadlar lost, engulfing both the Hyper-Demon and Dai in flames.
Dai and Hadlar are saved by the Hero Avan who arrives at the final moment and seals the reaper's trap. Kill tries to kill the Hero, but is counter-attacked and has its mask cut in half, swearing revenge against him.
Bloody Fight Arc
Killvearn has all his traps destroyed by the hero that was using glasses that could see invisible objects. Killvearn appears behind him and take him to another dimension to face him in a dirty duel. The hero is seemly killed and Killvearn returns, but the Hero made a plan and teleported himself with Kill without him knowing to the real world. The battle ends with Killvearn seemingly dead.
Flash of Light Arc
After Vearn is killed, Killvearn appears amongst the group of heroes during their celebration. It is revealed that Piroro is actually the real Killvearn, and the reaper thought to be Killvearn is just a doll controlled by him that contains a Black Core in its head. The Black Core then gets activated as Killvearn attempts to flee, however, Avan and Maam attack Killvearn as Dai and Popp use Zoom to fly off with the Reaper Puppet. Killvearn is then fatally wounded with Maam's Refractor Fist and falls to the ground. Before he dies, he explains it's already too late to save everyone before the Black Core goes off. As they fly off with the puppet, Dai kicks Popp away, sacrificing himself alone with the puppet to save all of his friends.
Abilities
Killvearn prefers to fight by using "kill traps" than fighting fair: most of them are themed after normaly playing cards and grow in power based on the value of the card (for example he notes that the Nine of Diamonds is a pretty strong trap) and at least the Nine of Diamonds make use of Hellfire to corral in the victim and burn them to ashes. One of his traps take the opponent with him to another dimension, where a duel would happen and an Underworld Judge machine would slay the loser (though it is rigged to never turn on Killvearn).
Even when using his weapon mastery, Killvearn would still cheat: his standard scythe is actually a "Reaper Flute", which can be directly played or simply whistle while swung around, causing the victim to become confused and weak (though if the scythe is damaged the effect is cancelled as it can no longer be played as a flute). When he's in "serious mode", Killvearn fights with a rapier with enough skill to match Avan, but also resorts to trickery by placing on the battlefield sharp sword-like blades which are invisible to the naked eye and produced from his cap.
Last but not least, his body contains not blood, but the scalding hot corrosive magma of the Underworld, so that even extremely strong weapons such as Baran's Demon Dragon Sword will lose edge and efficiency after cutting through him.
